The railway returns just published show that there was a great increase of all kinds of traffic, independently of that caused by the openfng of new lines* The number of passengers carried during the year was 335,931, or an increase on the previous year ot 114,473; goods, 202,378 tons, or an increase of 76,309 tons. The money receipts amounted to £104 219, showing an increa°e in twelve month 3 of £16,368. For the year 1874-5, the expenditure was 63*41 per cent, of receipts ; for 1875-96 it was 63*90 per cent.
