A THREAT TO BOMBARD LONDON.
•The New York papers of the 18th Maroh state that a large meeting, principally of Irishmen, had been held at; the .Cooper Institute, to protest against the detention of Condon, one of the men implicated in the Fenian Insurrection in Ireland. One of the speakers at the meeting said : "In tanking at this question we may consider that there are two ways of releasing this man— -one by begging (groans) and the other by the roar of American cannon (terrific applause) I say that, unfortunately, tbe American way has been- begging. Now, what was the duty of the United States ? Ie was to send their fleet and destroy the English capital in the same manner that England haa destroyed Magdaia, the capital of Abysinia." Commenting upon this, the Evening Standard (Guernsey) writes : — r" A ; message of terrible import was borne to ub across the Atlantic on Wednesday morning. At a meeting of indignant citizens of tbe United States — rprincipally Irishmen — held at a New York public hall, a speaker called on President Grant to send the American fleet over there forthwith lo destroy Lbndon, if Mr Disraeli did not release ' political prisoners' in general, and one Condon in particular, who is claimed as an American, and has been detained in durance for some years for complicity in the attack on the 'policevan at Manchester. Of course President Grant will oblige with pleasure, and of course the American fleet need only be Been on the horizon to drive tlfe 'cruisers of England, iron and wooden, steaming and sailing, into craven flight; and the invincible flotilla, with Stars and Stripes at the main, having Once made its unobstructed way up the Thames, and appeared before Woolwich, the defence of the Arsenal Will crumble to the ground and the 81 ton gun incontinently fall to pieces like the walls of Jericho. The prospect is. too dreadful to contemplate."
