CITY COUNCIL.
The usual meeting of this -Council was held last Ought." Present: (The Mayor, £rs. Levien, Gray, Waters, Pickering, Hooper, and Webb. A letter was received from the Central Fire Brigade, in connection with the £28 voted by the Council, and enclosing resolutions passed by them to the effects that there w.as no con,-, nection between ehem and the Port Brigade. Another letter was received from the Port Brigade, asking.the Council to apportion the amount voted. Cr Pickering proposed, and Cr Gray second«d, "That, two-thirds be handed over to the Town; and the remaining third to the Port Brigade." Cr Webb moved an amendment to the effect that the Council declined' to apportion the money. This was not seconded, and the original motion was carried by 4 to 3. Ayes: The.Mayor, Crs Levien, Gray, and Pickering. Noes: Crs Webb, Waters, and Hooper. A letter was received from the Provincial Secretary declining to grant a le»se to the harbor that was likely to be required for railway purposes. , 7 . . - The City Surveyor's report on the gasworks stated that the new work had been completed satisfactory. The ;City Surveyor reported that considerable damage had been done on the Haven road by tho late storm, and recommended that the necessary repairs be effected without delay. He was instructed to enter ipon them at once. ; The report of the Public Works Committee was read, and the following suggestions made in it were adopted :— That Mr A R. Oliver's offer to plant shrubs in Shelbourne street, to protect the cu'ting, on consideration of receiving a small grant from the Council, be accepted; that; the construction of a new lead to Mr Campbell's mill be lntistel upon, and that he be written to tit once upon the subject ; that five additional street-lamps be erected ; thnt the sum of jEIO be expended on the Britannia Heights, on condition that Mr K. S. Lucas contributed a similar amount. It was resolved, on tho motion of Cr Waters, V That the whole Council meet in Committee on Tuesday to consider the gorae bye-law." Regulations were agreed to appointing a new cab-stand at the Commercial Wharf. The following tenders for . forming St. Vincent-street were received : — Wilks and party, £399; Wise and party, £545 10s. ; M. Jones, £66 1 10s.; R. Carter, £781 sb. The lowest tender was accepted. No satisfactory tenders being received for supplying Wakapuaka gravel, fresh tenders were ordered to be caMed tor.
