Auckland, Tuesday. The Fiji Bank shareholders have confirmed the winding up resolution on the following terms, agreed toby the Bank of New Zealand: —That the Bank of New Zealand should give up all claims to 7000 acres of land In the Sairoi .i belonging to the Compiny. and that the Fiji Bunk shareholders Bhould either take New Z?aUnd Bink share), with interest irom the Ist ol March at £17 per share, or cash. The larg .st meeting ever held in Newcastle market took placß last night. It was c.lled to pa.s a resolution requesting the Government to proceed at once with the abolition question. Thi. was lost by a considerable mnjorfty, and an amendment p.saed, " That this meeting approves of the action of the Opposition in deferring the question bf abolition until more important matters have been dealt witb." The amendment was c .rried with Reclamation. Another meeting was then called by Mr Bryon, to take into con.titration the pressntaffair _ at Wellington, when he proposed the following resolution: — " That thi. meeting, although disapproving of the inform .lilies connected with the sale, thinks that the action of the Government in disposing of the Piako Swamp on the terms obtained wns wise, being aware that the improvement, effected there have been of great benefit to the district.-" An amendment of censure on the Government in the Piako Swamp transaction followed, and was carried by an overwhelming majority, after which a resolution to the eff .ct *' That whilst censoring the Government for their illegal transaction, this meeting is of opinion that the purchasers should not suffer hereby, but that a good title to tha land should be i.Bued forthwith," was carried. Meetings held at Alexandra and Hamilton townships supported the Government. An old woman, an habitual drunkard, was found dead in the police call, where she had been lodged for inebriety.
