The Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, JUNE 20, 1876.
We have received, several comrauni cations regarding the high rates charged for the conveyance of small boxes on the railway, double the amount which people have been accustomed to pay being asked. The consequence is that drays and chance conveyances are used for the purpose, not always to the convenience of the sender and receiver, and considerably to the loss of the traffic returns. Permission to make an alteration in such charges, which are described as being exhorbitant, could surely be obtained from head quarters it it can be shown that it would lead, as it certainly must do, to an increased use of the railway. 1 A tea. meeting in celebration of the re-opening 'of the Congregational Church will be held this evening, when addresses will be delivered by several ministers and friends. A meeting of the parishioners of All Saints' will be held at the Bishop's Schoolroom this evening at seven o'clock to consider what steps are to be taken in consequence of the resignation of the Yen. Archdeacon Thorpe. The Interprovincial Regatta Committee will meet at the Trafalgar Hotel at half-past seven this evening. Another fortunate individual. Mr M'Credie, chief steward of the steamer Albion, received a letter from home by the last mail informing him that by the demise of a near relation he has been left the handsome sum of £10,000. We are glad to learn that there is a probability of a third concert bein'g given in the Provincial Hall on Friday evening, when Mdlle de Murska will take her benefit. The iormal announcement of the election of Mr Everett as Mayor will take place at'the Council Chamber at noon to-morrow.
