It is understood the evening papers throughout the Colony will be allowed to receive 500 words each during the session at evening rate*! in place of the 200 now allowad . The Government intend next session to ■introduce a measure amending the Coroner's administration' and it is understood th-»t the chief feature of the measme will he the appointment of the Resident Magistrate as the Coroner in every district of tha country, to the supersession of other functionaries who may now chance to hold that office. Wbere the Resident Magistrate cannot possibly attend an inquest the duty for the time being will devo've. upon some one or other of the Ju tices in the locality. In order to improve the personnel of the Coroner's jury it is proposed to reduce th) numler, probably to not more thnn seven and not le*s than four, due care being taken in the se'ection. Thursday. The Times ofthis morning urges the necessity for codifying the statutes of the co'ony, and recommends that the work be entrusted to the hands of Judge Richmond when he returns to the colony. Christohobch, Wednesday.. A petition fs beiog got up to the Assembly praying for the construction of a railway from Lincoln Station, twelve miles from Christchurch, to Akaroa. The intervening hills will make it an expensive undertaking, At a meeting of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College yesterday the Hon. B. W. ; Stafford estimated that the annual income of the College from reserves will shortly be jEIO.OOo. ' Port Chalmers, Thursday. Sailed—Margaret Galbraith, for London, with a cargo of wool, wheat, tallow, and sperm oil, valued at £21,132. Donedin, Thursday. At the Dunedin Licensing Court the Bench refused several licenses yenterday on the ground of the applications being pnt in too late. Several large hotels, therefore, are shut up. > The rosult of the late Carnival was satisfactory; the sum of £1,805 having been realized. The railway earnings last month were £1.100 A meeting of the representatives of the various Friendly Societies was held last evening to consider the proposed Bill to be introduced into Parliament, when the following resolutions were passed :—" That the whole of the Societies of Dunedin he invited to send three delegates to attend the Conference for the purpose of considering the Societies' Bill . proposed to be introduced this session by the Government..' In order to give an opportunity for a Bill being considered, it was resolved, " That this meeting begs to express its appreciation of the action taken by the Government in drafting a new Friendly Societies Bill,, but would urge npon the Government the de-drability of not submitting the Bill to Parliament for at least a month after the opening of the session, as the Societies have not yet had time to examine thoroughly the proposed measure." It was also agreed that the Conference between the Friendly Societies should take place on the evening of Jane 23.
