A WORD WORE ABOUT SHORT MEASURE.

TO THE J&DITOR OF THE • JiJVENING MAH.' Sir,— When writing in reply to "Enquirer " regarding the deficiency in the weight of Scotch fingering yarn; I quite expected to mest -with some such attack as that made upon me by Mr ■' Cheviot Wool." *• Cheviot Wool " insinuates that I had not deemed it fitting lo notice the deficiency referred to until I was myself out of the business. Jn reply to this, I may state that it ia not more than fourteen or fifteen months since I became aware of tbe shortcoming in the number of threads in a skein *, and I can prove that I lost no time in endeavoring to put a stop to the petty villainy ; as, immediately on discovering the fraud, I called at the two principal importihg hou its in Nelscn ani informed them of the swindle; and threatened publicly ti expose it, if means were not adopted by them to rectify the evil ; and I have to confess tbat the matter bad escaped my memory until reminded by the letter of •• Enquirer." " Cheviot Wool " states further that I am evidently not awar» that the yarn I speak of is not sold by the pound.

' With reference to. this remark, I beg to say that when " Ghevi >c Wool •" was in long c'othfß, I was a» well informed on the aubject "" under discussion as he possibly can be at the present time; and I 'again affirm, that a head of Scotch fingering yarn should weigh sixteen ounces. v ; s Mr *• Cheviot Wool " concludes by stating that ho haß read of an old worn in taking her daughter to a store to chew prints for the purpose of testing the colors, and of other equally ridtculom things, but never heard of, one to count threads, measure cotton reels and dust the eyes of needles: and I, in conclusion, may say, that this till y, flippant re- . m»rk leads one to infer that Mr "Cheviot Wool " deems it a very light mattsr to rob the public &% far as practicable Shou'd Mr " Cheviot Wool " think fit to write again on this snbject, it might prove more advantageous to the puVlic than ti himself were he to subscribe his real name. I am, &c, . Jambs P. Black. Nelson, June 15, 1876.
