LIGHT LOAVES.

To the Editor ov k thk ' Evening Mati,.'

Sifc— Now that the question of cheap meat hns been prominently brought before the public by a philanthropic butcher, the question has suggested itsolf to me that something might be done in the matter of another system of pettifoggery which prevails in the town to an alarming extent— l mean the short weight of bread. I have been in the habit of dealiDg with a certain baker in town for the last eighteen months, an.l from computations ma<le at various times by weighing the bread I find that a large loaf, which ought to weigh four pound*, and is sold by the baker as that weight, only weighs three pounds eight ounces — having a deficiency of eight ounces. A neighbor of mine the other morning sent for a four pound loaf, with the object of having it at jentaculum, . and which, as he thought, would have gone round the whole table, but his surprise on weighing it and finding it only three pounds eight ounces, can be better imagined than described ... - The . result was that he had to go without hit breakfast tint morning. ; The question has been put to me by him over anl over attain, Is there no Inspector of Weights ani M-a---■urea in Nelson, An), if ao, wh>t haa becoms of him? In the other provinces of N«w Zealand, I, am told, there. is one appointed by the Government, whoso duty it is to go round annually, and see that the weighing: machines of all itinerant vendors are on the square. If any «urch vendor i» found to have a falsa scale he is at pace eummoned, and generally mulcted in a heavy penalty. Noir, if Nelion possessed such an Inspector there would be lees grumbling among the housekeepers. - . . lam,fte n „.,.. -. _ . f John MoCiHABT, ; Nehon, June 12, 18'76. ' *
