INTERPROVINCIAL.
Wellington, Monday. A general meeting of the Roman Catholics was held in St. Mary's Cathedral yesterday to discuss the question of providing education for the Roman Catholic children of Wellington. Bishop Redwood occupied the chair. The following resolution was carried unanimously :—-" That the Catholics of Wellington, in union with their fellow Catholics all over the world, fully appreciate the importance and necessity of a thoroughly sound Catholic education for their children, and, in dutiful obedience to the advice of their chief pastor, are deterrniuedto make every sacrifice required for that sacred" and urgent purpose." A resolution was also carried to the effect that immediate*and efficient means be adopted to erect a large central school wortliy of the Christian Brothers who are to teach. Subscriptions were at once opened, ftjujl ©jei ; JSIOOO were subscribed, on;the spot.
iNVERCARGitii, Monday. Yesterday a fire occurred in Tay-street in Meehan's bootmaker's shop. The entire building,' comprising two shops, was burnt to the ground; The Family Hotel ran a great risk- Meehan's stock was insured for £300 and £200 in the Standard. The house was uninsured. An inquiry will be held. Blu_?f, Monday. The Albion has arrived, having left Melbourae at 1 p.m. on the 7th instant. She experienced light winds until yesterday, whei she got a strong westerly gale. She passed the Solanders at 11-30 yesterday, the weather being very thick and squally, and arrived at the Bluff at 9 o'clock this moraing. She brings 20 saloon and 29 steerage passengers and 180 tons of cargo for all ports, also the English mail ex Sumatra. She sails for Dunedin at noon to-morrow. Passengers for Nelson — Mr Monro, and Mrs Golesing and family (five). *
