Sir - Some lady visitors of the Nelson Aid Society are now engaged in collecting subscriptions to the funl of this Society. I shall be much obliged if you will kindly publish a few extracts from some of the schedules (or reports) of cases which have applied to the Society for relief. By so doing you may assist those kind ladies in their labor of love; you may convey to some of your readers quite novel information as to the really severa oistross for the, means of. livelihood which afflicts a few even in our' mug little City of Nelaon, usually spoken of aa being, in a quiet way, ao comfortable; and
you will make known Jthe. disproportionately small relief granted by; the Society to some of these casei, simply owing to the elendernpsa of the fundi e.itrusted .to i% for ( disposal. For obvious reasons these 1 , cases are indicated simply by letters ot the alphabet; but tbe names will be given to any who may wish to to assist. — I am, &c, C. Hufter Broavn, Hon. Sec N.A.S. P S — The bilance at the Bmk is now reluced to about £30. A.B — Widow, immigrant from Scotland. Two sons and two dauebt- rs; eldest son out of work, young* r- son ill;., eMest daughter dying of consumption. | Since this report was writ'en one eon and, one daughter have die*!, and the remninini? daughter is now ill of coiisump'ion. A.B. has tnd M granted her] CD — Middle age t,not t-trong, suffers much from her eyes; five young children; can earn 2*. 6d a day by plain' Bewing, but cannot rget * work every day; receives from Government'' per week 141bs bread, 71bs meat, 14lbs pota-' toes, sugar, 2ozs tei, and 22s 6 i per week for rent. CD. has received from the Society for the latt three months 10s per month for rent.' and a bag of flour monthly.* ; ,' ; \ i ; E.F.— Age about 30; hui-bnnd in Lunatic Asylum ; has supported herself and two young children by washing; expects her confinement in two weeks; has nothing iri the house or any tbing but charity to depsnd upon ; ■• has app ; ied to Government for rati ms for the, next month. J. rec6ive3 a tfote of 10s for provision... , KL' —Age 45 ; dying of consumption ; wife and three chldren ;; highly . ve soectable ;. character; wife a dressmaker, but a stronger" here, and cannot get full work at her trade.** K.L. received £ I for necessaries; afterwards £2 towards, expense ,of removing to West Coast, where an opportunity of full employment awaited the wife. Tbese are a sample of tunny deserving cases 'relieved ; "many cases. havs also, .beiyr- re jeeted^ after investigation briicebunt of. bad.ctiaraci§l£ or of unreality of distress. For instance: — M".N:— Widow, middle age, feeble, attended by doctor; has two small boys; needlewoman, no employment; desires to be assisted to Canterbury, where she has fi iend*. M.N. was assisted lor the time with half a guinea from the Emergency Fund, and inquiry was maie of these Can'erbury friends. Ab it appeared that they had assisted her away from.C .nterr-. bury, and deprecated her beiog assisted back again, ail to return to Canterbury was refused. M.N then contrived to support her- | self, and has since mimed." | Some cases,, more transparently .unfit for. relief, have been rejected without arriving* at the dignity of being reported ou in a schedule. One young woman, for instance, drove uo in a carriage to ask for. assistance to get to Auttr«Ha.
