The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, JUNE 10, 1876.
We are glad to learn that, afc , the request of several of the Councillors and a number of the ratepayers, Cr Everett has consented to become a candidate for the Mayoralty pf Nelson. Mr Everett, since he has been a member of the Council, has displayed such an aptitude for the work, and has devoted so much attention to mastering all the details of the office that we .feel sure that it would be difficult to find in the whole town a gentleman better fitted to be its Mayor. Erom a telegram received in town last night we learn that the ease of Levien Ay. Cohen, tried before the Supreme Court at Blenheim yesterday, resulted in a verdict for the plaintiff for £100 damages and costs. The action was one for malicious prosecution, and the plaintiff claimed £1000 damages. Mr Conolly and Mr Pitt appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr Fell and Mr Rogers for fche defendant. By the Kennedy, which arrived from Karamea yesterday evening,. four families returned from that land of promise. Tbey do not speak in raptures , of the settlement. ' Areas gbments having been made for Ilma de Murska to give two concerts'in Nelson, they will take place in the Proyincial Hall on the evenings of Monday, the 19th, and Wednesday, the 2 1st instant. She herself is an artiste whose equal has never yet visited New Zealand, and she is accompanied by Signor Giammona, a magnificent flautist, Signor Susini, the famous basso, Signoa Rosnati, the well known tenor, and Maestro Ilia, who is said to be a first-class pianist. Such a company should indeed attract a crowded audi-" ence. On Tuesday next a plan of the Hall will be on view at Mr Stanton's, where seats may be secured. Thebk was a crowded attendance at the Good Templars meeting held at the Temperance ; Hall last, night, when addresses were delivered by Mr T. Scott, who . recently occupied a high position in the Order in England, the Revs J. Beckenham and G:. S. Harper, and Mr W. Price. Between the addresses a. number of Sankey's hymns were sung by the choir. At a meeting of the officers of the Friendly Societies, in Nelson, held at the Oddfellows Hall on Thursday night, to take; into consideration the new Bill to be brought down by the Government, there was a good attendance, and the Bill was pretty freely criticised. Ultimately it was; resolved to refer it to a subcommittee consisting of Messrs Bunny, Smith, Jennings, Moore, Finney, M'Gee, Levestam, Armstrong, Jones, Graham, Amos, and Foote. The following unusual notification appears in the last Provincial Government Gazette: — " Tbe Superintendent directs it to be notified that the. contract with the proprietors of the Buller News for advertising Government Notices for the twelve months ending 31st March, 1877, has been cancelled." This is followed by another notification to the effect that the Westport Star is to have tbe Government advertisements. And instead of being signed as usual by the Provincial Secretary they bear the signature of lhe Clerk to the Superintendent. What does it all mean? There must be mystery somewhere.
