The case was dismissed. ;; , In a case of vagrancy this morning, at the Police Court, Mr Pyke, the pre.iding magistrate, intimated the intention of the Bench to carry out the Act strictly according to its terms, throwing ths onus of proof on defendant as to how his or her living was obtained. ' A woman whs was so charged, though she produced a' Bank book showing considerable funds, was convicted and sentenced. At a meeting of the Chmnber of Commerce to-day the annual report was read, also a voluminous report of the Committee appointed to report upon the existing bankruptcy law. In their general recommenda- J tions, the Committee recommend . strongly that a special Act be passed, validating all past, proceedings under the Debtors' and Creditors' Act, la7s,in so far as they are rendered doubtful by conflict between the Act and the rules of the Court, or by ambiguities existing. The Committee also recommend the Chamber to pointedly urge upon the Government that evidence of experienced persons should be taken before a Select Committee of Parliament before an arrunded Act is passed, and that such evidence should aho be obtained for the information of tbe Governor in Council before the amendaien'B of rules of Court are passed.
