The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 7, 1876.
I At the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning one of the first cases under the 10th section of the "Naval Training Schools Act" was heard. Walter Holt Miller stated that his sons Clements Miller, and George James Miller were altogether beyond his control, and he therefore applied for an order for them to be sent to the Naval { Training School at Kohimarama. liis Worship, after hearing the grounds on ' which the application was made, granted it at once. As the provisions of this tenth section are not generally known, we will quote it for the information of he public. It is as follows: — '* Where the parent or step parent or guardian of a boy apparently under the age of fourteen years, aad over the age of ten yeara,
represents to a Resident Magistrate thnt he is unable to control the boy, and that be desires that the boy be sent v to a Naval Training School under ihis Act, such Magistrate, if satisfied on enquiry tbat it is expedient to deabwith. the boy under this Act, '"may order him to be sent to a NavM Training Sbbbol." As a sea life is nofc suitable for all constitutions there, is another clause in the Act which .provides for lads sent to the Training School being .otherwise \ disposed of. Ifc may be as well that this too should be known, and we therefore publish the 26fch section: — °If at any time it shall be shown to the satisfaction of the Minister that any boy detained in a Naval Training School is not fitted for the sea service, or does not consent to go to Bea as, and in manner hereinbefore required, it shall be lawful for the Manager of any Naval Training School where such boy shall be detained, with the consent of tho Minister, to apprentice him to some trade or c-Ulinsr with such person or persons as miy be thought fit and proper for that purpose, but bo that no such boy shall be apprenticed under the age of twelve years, nor for a term extending beyond the age of eighteen years."
