The Nelson Evening Mail. MONDAY, JUNE 5, 1876.
At the. Resident Magistrate's Court this morning "W". Cane sued T. B. Louisson for £2 12s for overtime wages. Some of the time was disputed, and judgment was eventually given for 19s and costs. The rite of confirmation was administered to thirty two candidates at All Saints' Church yesterday evening by his Lordship the Bishop of Nelson, who delivered a most impressive address. The church was crowded in every part, there not being even standing room for many, who had to leave the door. Members of the Regatta Committee are reminded that, a meeting will be held at the Trafalgar Hotel this evening at half-past seven. Jn our advertising columns under the heading " Private " appears a notice that a Quadrille Assembly will be held in the Odd-Fellows' Hall to-morrow evening. The following paragraph appeared in this morning's Times: — " Mr Batty, well known as the pioneer of the Brunner coal mine, left Nelson for the West Coast on Saturday. ,He returned from Collingwood a few days previously, where he had been to inspect the celebrated Richmond Hill silver mine.. Mr Batty is a practical . miner ' of many years experience, and his opinion of the Collingwood mine is that it will prove a very valuable property to its owners." This might have been interesting if Mr Batty had been to Collingwood, but as he did not go, his opinion, if expressed at all, can scarcely carry much weight with it. . . Nearly £100 has already .been subscribed at Masterton (an out district in Wellington) for the erection of a Good Templars' Hall in that rising township.
