i Members of the- Wesley an Church choir ; are reminded that there will be practice this evening .at seven .o'clock sharp. ; The adjourned, annual general meeting of the members of the City Artillery dorps will be held at the Nelson Hotel this -evening. '■"•'■■'■'". v The concert advertised to take place in the Stoke "'Public. . Hall last night was a complete success both as regards ; the performance and the audience, the latter being swelled by the attendance of several visitors from town. The songs; glees, and , instrumental music which comprised, the programme were well and correctly rendered, and one nior.e.w&s added "to" the number of pleasant evenings which have at intervals been provided for the residents in the" Sfcoke district by the local amateurs. We had an opportunity to-day of inspecting some very beautiful , water color paintings by Mr Hoyte, who enjoys and.- very deservedly so, a high reputation as an artist. /The views are of some of the grandest 'mountain* scenery, of the ranges in the neighborhood of Lake Wakatip, in the Province of Otago and on the road between Christcburch and Hokitika, as well as the, Hot Lakes, inrthe North Island. They are on view at Mr J. Hounsell's, and are well worth a visit. As Mr Hoyte intends remaining in Nelson some months,' he; will; be happy to execute any local orders. ; Some time since we published an extract from a letter received by a gentleman here complaining of the quality; of Nelson hops. To-day we have beeii shown another letter, from which the following is "an extract:—"Nelsongrown hops are not much in favor here; the irregularity of growth, also in curing are subjects of general remark amongst brewers." "We fear if growers do not pay more attention to their crops and the drying that this important article of export will seriously suffer, and perhaps become saleable only at so low a price that many farmers will have to give up growing them. The. steeplechase and hurdle race horses • Butcher Boy, Gazelle, Don J uau, gand Moose, were shipped this morning by the Hawea for Canterbury, to take part in the Great National and other jumping races on her Majesty's
Birthday.. .^ Ghiy, Ifawkes. vwas also shipped for Canterbury, Nhe/^will quietly repose on his well earned laurels at Mr B^dwooii's training stables at Riccarton, luntil the jbinift of preparation shaTParrivi^for|heSl^pp'6panSprTiig\ Meeting. The whole of the horses ; were safely placed in the hold of the Hawea. . The Marlborough Times of May 9th understand that Mr Foy, Government ; Engineer, \flef£ : Blenheim yesterday j morning for Pelorus and Sai Valley." He proceeded by Kaituna to Havelock, and will extend hir survey "into"' the - Nelson Province, the object being to select the best route for connecting the Picton and Blenheim railway with Nelson, and to report thereon to. the i Go^ yernraent before the of; Pat- ''■■ liament.
