' f We are glad to find that a movement is being made in the direction, of forming a Chess. Clul) in Nelson, for which purpose a meeting of those interested will be held at the Masonic Hotel on Friday evening., "We have amongst us several players who are able to hold their own against most, if not all, comers, and there should be no difficulty in forming a very excellent club.-' \ . • * It will be seen by our Court report that proceedings have been commenced against . owners of unregistered doga. If there are still any such in Nelson they would do well to take warning and save themselves the trouble of a visit to the .Resident Magistrate, and the expense of fine and costs. ; At. the Kesident : Magistrate's Court to-day, Charles Bleehec was charged with a breach of the 31st clause of the 13th schedule of the Municipal Corporations. Act, in that (in the words, of the information) " after having given notice to the Council of his intention to repair the: outward part of a building in ■'Trafalgar-street, such building being within ; ten feet of a footway, he did begin 'to' execute such repairs the expiration of 48 hours after giving such notice.". Defendant was fined 10s and costs 9s. — Eight owners of unregistered dogs appeared in obedience t to summonses issued by the police, and were fined 5s and. costs for each unticketed animal.— Several cattle trespass informations and one or two small debt cases formed. .the rest of the proceedings. "■• The Nelson Football- Club held a general, meeting last night, which was well attended: . Mr Hugh Grully was. elected Secretary for" the 'ettSuing year. The following' Committee., was ap-. pointed: — Messrs Boy, H. Hodgson, T. Nicholson, and. J. Barnicoat, with the Secretary exqfficio. It was decided that the subscription for the season should be five shillings as heretofore, : and that the opening game should take place in the Botanical .Reserve on Saturday afternoon next, at three o'clock. All who intend to join the Club are requested to take part in the game. Mr. Mirfin, late of Nelson, who is now engaged in superintending the erection 1 of the Lighthouse on The Brothers, has kindly forwarded to the Instituts some specimens of lizards froih that rocky island. Two of these, Avlrich are alive, are enormous fellows, measuring at least, 18m. in length, and. are of a greenish brown ' hue, resembling exactly a mosscovered stone, for which, when lying quiet, they might well he taken. Preserved in spirits, are about a dozen smaller ones of various kinds. . They will form an interesting addition to the native curiosities to be found in the Museum. It will be seen by our telegrams that another serious fire, has occurred in Queen-street Auckland. From another source than the Press Agency we have received the following as the correct list of policies held by those insured:— On buildings totally destroyed — New Zealand, £1000; Victoria, £250 ; Imperial, £250 ; National, £250. On stocks partially destroyed — Standard, £1650; South British £1300 (probable loss £500) ; Victoria, £1000 ; Norwich Union, £800 ; Imperial, £600 ; /Transatlantic, £350 ; New Zealand, £300. A building damaged was also insured in the Royal for £1000.
