The Murray is still at Hokitika, where she has been detained by the state of the bar for three days. She expects to make her escape to-day. The Taranaki, which left here on Sunday night, arrived at Port Chalmers at 9.30 this morning, having made the run, including stoppages at the various ports, in 56 hours. Mr Plimaoll writes to the Pall Mall Gazette to say that he has excellent authority tor making the following statement: " That out of 79 vessels detained for alleged unseaworthiness in the port of tiunderland alone, under the {Shipping Act of 1873, every one, on subsequent survey, was found to be unseawortby; not one mistake had besn made, but 16 of these vessels, the tonnage of which ranged irom 80 to 2*o tons, have eince been sold by auction, and that not one of them realised so much as £30."
