The Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, APRIL 18, 1876.

The Wallace, which arrived from Wanganui this morning, brought over six horses to take part in the Nelson Race meeting, namely, Mr JYeeth's Treason and Satellite, Mr T. Rose's Folly and Gaiusborough, and Messrs M'Rae and Nicholson's Butcher Boy aud Gazelle. It is said that several othor horses are coming from various parts of the colony, so that there is every probability of an excellent inaeting. An accident occurred last night to°a horse and cart belonging to Mr Cook, butcher. _ They were, so far as we can learn, loft standing on the road near the Rising Sun lun, when the horse strayed avvay, aud at a spot near Mr Davis' residence on the Waimea Road, he must havo walked over the bank, where horse, trap, and a full cargo of meat were found lying all in a heap by some gentlemen who were riding iuto town, and who with some difficulty cut the horse adrift. No serious injury was sustained either by the horse or cart. The tea and public meeting in celebration of the thirty-second anniversary of the Nelson School Society have bcoti postponed on account of the weather until to-morrow evening. We have been requested to state that an entertainment which was to have been given at tho Lunatic Asylum tonight, on tho occasion of opening the new building, has been unavoidably postpoued, indirectly on account of the weather, but directly owing to the state of the road, which, having been only newly made, has been rendered impassable even for empty conveyances by the heavy rain that has fallen.
