Wellington, Saturday. Thn plasterers of tbe new Government Buildings liave be*n «fu c ed the additional one shilling per day, and will be on strike after to-day. ; Timaru, Sunday. Atone o'clook this morning, a fire broke out in a cottage under suspicious chenra- N stances. The house was occupied by a man named Sydney Jones, and a woman known as Nellie Duncan. On the neighborhooi being a!a r med, and assistance soon arriving, Sydney Jones, and another man named But'er were seen lying outside near a fence, the former raving mad drunk, and the latter in a sound drunken sleep The police took charge of them, and Jones had to be held down by two policemen. After the fire had nearly exhausted itself, the charred remains of a woman near a bed, supposed to be Nellie Duncan, were found. A doctor was eent for, who examined the body by the light of a candle, and the remains were taken to a neighboring ho i< 1. A drunken row was beard in the house a little while previous to the fire. The Timaru Fire Brigade did not arrive till ths bouse was burnt. The night was fortunately cilm. Patba, Saturday. Afc about five o'clock thi j morning, a fire broke out in M-Guire's store. The buildiog was entirely destroyed. It was insured in the South British for £400, and the 6tock at £300. Tiiey had a very heavy stoak. however, which was valued at £3,500. The contents of Price's iron sa'e wtre all right. No other buildings were injured.
