The General Government Commissioners had an interview with tha Superintendent, and will- report to head quarters. They consider it ladyisable not to give information to the Press. The Superintendent also declined to state wbat transpired at ihe interview. - . Christchorch, Monday. The Canterbury Marble Company have i opened' up a mpgnificent lot of marb'.e in I their quarry. Tbe f -Homing s the result of the analysis^ by Profess >r Bickerton : — The sample! o£, marble was found to contain 98 53 per cent of carbonate of lime with an insoluble residue, coa'isting of silica, alumina, and manganese, the 'coloring ni-itU-r le-ng due to the latter constituent. It is a very fine sample of nmble, the refuse irom which will make excellent lime. , t Wkstpout, Saturday. Dissatisfaction exists -among working m?n at the attempted reduction of wag<*B on the Mount Rochforb Railway Works, §A large and orderly meeting vai held last evening, and nn unanimous resolution passed against the aceeptauco of less than 12a per d4y. The Brunner Railway was formally opened for traffic by. hisdJ.onor the Superintendent. A procession whs formed, composed of the Firo Brigade; Vcqunteers, Friendly Societies, and general public, which pro-.eerted by train to Brunnerton, where the ceremony took place. The Superintendent congratulated the province and the General Government on the coinpletion;of.*the first railway in Westland, and predicted it was only the commencement of Sines Which eventually would connect Greymouth with Hokitika <m;l the East Coast of Canterbury. A banquet ' arid ball took place in the evening, in honor of the occasion.
j i : Auckland, Monday. A man of duration, named Egan, an engineer by profy-si m, is charged with expasiug hiins If before children; A fatal accident occurred in tho harbour ye-terday. Five young men went out in a dingy to go on board the Broderick Ca?tlc, and the wind getting up the dingy soon filled with wa*er and it sank. Oniy two of the men could swim. A eon of Mr Keals, architect, swrtm to a cutter lying mar, anl go! a dingy aqd picked up three others. Tlie drowned body of Sydney Reynolds drifted ashore at low watsr three after. Horace Walker, who was saved, was insensible whea pinked up. The accident occurred within 300 yards of the shore, and in sight of several persons. Ko assistance waa afforded.
