CbSTUMEMOEICKET MATCH.
j ; ; ; The result of yesterday's, match was in /fa'vpr of the 'stage team, who l scored' 72 against their opponents 56, the top s'dorers'being Mr-M'Gabe on the town side 17, and Mr, I). Everett; -who appeared to handle the bat quite as skilfully as he did the policeman's baton, 15. There w^s considerable fun over j the appearance ■ of ' Muffemdorf Guffee, Esq., with an enormous bat which com> pletely concealed ,his wicket from the ;. bowler, at one etidj'and the Ploughboy, iwith a minature bat, at the other, both of which appeared to be equally difficult /to play with. After the game no little amusement was 1 created by the inoun'ting| on their steeds 1 of- those who were about to return to town on horseback. ' ■Two of the players endeavored to persuade a pony to carry double weight, but pony was far too sensible' for that, and the would-be horsemen speedily found themselves on the ground in anything but a l dignified position. In course of time, , however, the procession was ifornied and'starfced for town, accompanied by the Band, who were also in costume, and a more grotesque cortege ' probably uever paraded a town before. In the evening,, at the performance of the Hiberriicori Troupe, the Oddfellows Hall was crowded' to excess; and during the interval Mr A. M*Q-ee presented to . Mr Ldvye, for the Lunatics Recreation Eund, the handsome sum of £40 Is, being the net proceeds of the day's proceedings. In doing sovhe said; — " Sir— On behalf bf the gentlemen who have assisted me to-day in a worthy • cause, I have great pleasure in handing to you tne ' proceeds of f th'e costume match— £4o .Is-t- for the augmentation of the fund provided for the recreation of the lunatic's at present' confined in th;e Nelson Asylum." .Mr Lowe in acknowledging it said :— "rSirr-;! have very ..great pleasure 'in returning you, ; fche members of the Hibernicon Troupe, and > the other gentlemen who have assisted; in this successful day's amusement, my sincere thanks for your very handsome donation to a fund provided for a very praiseworthy purpose. Tour "valuable gift, added to the fund already raised, will; enable . the committee to purchase a piano, and provide other means for the melioration of the condition- of the inmates of the Nelson Asylum, and on their behalf I again thank' you very cordially." Mr 'W Gee then moved a vote of thanks to the members of the Hibornicon Troupe for 'the ..valuable assistance the^; had;: rendered at the match. This, as "might; i have been' expected, : was carried'^ with tremendous applausei "
