The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 22, 1876;
The year's lease pf the Grovernmerit wharf was put up to auction this morning, but, owing probably to sufficient publicity not having been given to the sale, the only persons present were the. present lessee and his .clerk.. The upset price .was £700, but in, the present condition of the tumble down oldthing thiswas laughed at, and, so ifc r remains unlet. A striking comment upon the present management; of Provincial affairs. The existing wharf too rotten to find a lessee, the new one not yet commenced, although the money, was, forthcoming nearly two years ago. ! Some little. • excitement was occasioned this morning by the schooner Pelican, which is lying at . anchor in the. Bay, .signalling that her boat was mining,' and asking for assistance. As the boat was known, to ''have' left the shore : before daylight with .four '."men on board, the con-, elusion was at once arrived at that she had not reached the schooner, and fears were entertained for the lives of those on board. A boat, manned by volunteers at once put off, and was shortly followed by the pilot-boat, and to the great relief .of. all-it was found that .he men had arrived on board safely, but that, the boat had- broken adrift during the night,' and ' the assistance required was ito recover it. : In the. meantime, it had, we understand; been> picked up by. the Bpldon, which is lying; at the outer anchorage.' There is likely to be a large turn out of the townspeople on the wharf to meet them. Another cricket match is spoken of, the Printers having invited the School- ' masters to meet them i in the field. . Should the 1 challenge' be accepted, as in' all probability: it. will, a good game may be looked. for. ... - ; /TtfE 'Orphans' .Home at., Motueka had its annual examination and distribution of regards 'on- Wednesday, the : 15th instant.
