Airec narrowly escaped a bad fall in the Dunedin Circus on Saturday last. Port of the trapeze gave way, but be slid down a rope. The Stockport magistrates have imposed the full penalty of £5 on a woman who had sold some of thQ clothing of a son who was suffering frem small-pox. The result ef the defendant's indiscretion was that several other persons were attacked by the disease. An Adelaide telegram to the Melbourne papers, dated sth March, says that the Chief Justice, Sir R. Hanson, died suddenly of heart disease on Saturday night, at his residenoe, Mount Lofty, aged 70 years. Sir Richard Hanson was one of the original founders of the Wellington province, and for a long time resided in it. — Argus. A New Market for Sheep : A friend of mine ( says " Atticuß," in the Melbourne Leader) who baß ju9t returned from a long tour in the East has suggested a new trade— the exportation of fat stock to India, Ceylon, and the Straits. Fresh mutton is worth from one shilling to eighteenpence a pound in parts of Anglo- Asia, and is of the most wretched description and quality. Sheep could be delivered from Melbourne or Sydney in three weeks ; and from the northern ports of Queensland or Western Australia in fifteen days. I should like to see an experimental shipment; for if live cattle can be sent from South America to Southampton there should be uo difficulty in sending sheep from Australia to Calcutta* The following items are from Otago exchanges: — Hop-growing is being successfully carried on at Winton— The opening night of the Timaru Gasworks is fixed for the 25 ih instant. — A dead trout, 13in. in length, has been found floating on Butel's Dim, Arrowtown, supposed to have beeu poisoned by the matter used in wool-washing. — A party of 24 Chinamen are reported to have left Cardrona with uo less than £8,000 worth of gold. They are homeward bound. — There are nine schoolmasters and three schoolmistresses advertised for in the Otago Provincial Gazette. There is one very satirical advertisement. A schoolmaster is advertised for for Fortrose, salary £60, and it is added, "Preference will be given to a married man." Poor married man !
