WAIMEA BRIDGE.
To the Editor of tiie ' Evening Mail.'
Sir — On Saturday last, in your interesting* paper "The Week," I was, ior a moment startled wiih. the satisfactory idea thU our Provincial Secretary was going round to *' iui-pect the public works and see what was required in the various districts before handing the province over to the General Government;" also that "anoher hinted that a hole in a bridge in an out-district hid cmsed an insurrection," &c. But I was sadly disappointed when I learnt that the object of his riding was only a pig purchasing expedition, though the idea is not, after all, so bad. to send to the Karamea our pig 3, and to ge*; in return our hams from that new settlement. However, I would on this occasion suggest if ever our Provincial Secretary gies again on a similar expedition, that he should direct it towards the Waimea bri'lge, and lake the trouble to examine at the west end of it the bunk which supports it, and he will see that with a very little expense he could prevent the breaking of that part of the bridge, nnd save the inhabitants of the surrounding districts the great inconvenience of beinj? obliged to cross, for months to come, with tht ir carts the bed of the river, instead of the present substantial bridge, which must breik down at the first flood unless something be done. This comparatively insignificant work should be proceeded with at once, for it will not be long before heavy rains set iD, and if that end of the biidge is allowed to be carried away it will not be replaced without a considerable expense to the province and a great annoyance to farmers, as waa the case with the Wai-iti bridge not ao many months since. lam, &c, , Farmer.
