A correspondent of the Southland News writes: — " Why are the girls in our public schools taught to write in that miserable angular style known as ' lady's hand ?' Why should they be systematically brought to an even level of sameness, rendering it next to impossible, to distinguish ons educated -woman's writing from another's? Why, in these days of progreßß, when the desirability of enlarging the sphere of woman's work ie so generally acknowledged, are girls sent irora school jncapable of writing a good, round comine7cial band? Faßhion has no doubt Boraet hing to do with it, but surely it is time tu ere WBB a change. ludeed it is wonderfu' that the sex should have submitted so lon£ t° tQ © dictates of a custom that has realty nothing to recomrfienM it. They mi'^bt just as well go' about in the coal-scuttle Nnnets of j their grandmothers as continue id use the cramped style of caligraphy tha. 4 ! was considered * quite the thing ' by the aaid old ladies,"
