Tuesday, Maeph 7* .hc'-;-' > ' ■ : The Board's monthly meeting was held -at tne^Rtehmood Institute. Present—Messrs i__igent (chaiircdan), Bell, Tunniol jfiV, Jordan, .and -Martin. The minutes of last meeting having; been read and confirmed, the Overseer read hw ! report as follows:*— "The contract of J. Schwas8 r under the payment to provinces; grant, forming on Moutere Hills, £50 vi ss, : is finished. W.Neumann requests a further advance of £30 on adcohrit'fof contract '.gravelling -io Pigeon Valley.' E. Jellyman also requireß,,£so , advance on his shingle - ctfn tract ; s ; * ; the j quantity s 'delivered is sufficient to warrantee amount. The daj^libbr • "_dan at Stoke has been employed paring the sides of the roads from the<toU-gate to the top of the hill j a portion of the stuff has been used to improve. the, gradient and the remainder has ' been carted away by owners of property adjacent* At Waimea East, in consequence of the day-labor man being absent for the past two months it will be requisite to employ extra hands to clear* the : following water-courses, namely^tbe ditch r below Mr Hodder's, whlcn is choked with furze, and that through Mr Canning's farm at Ranzau; a great portion of the water flows down the roid -inßtead of taking its proper course; this latter work might be let by." contract. In consequence of the incf^sihg traffic and the narrowness of the present bridge at,Jsichmond corner leading to the railway station, I should recommend* the putting of a two-feet barrel drain; the, material out of the present' bridge^ would repair that one by Mr Sbeat's. The inhabitants of Ranzau ask to be supplied with timber foR iy m"akirig a -'-bridge over a chasm by Mr Selling's; it would be a great convenience. A au'pply of broken metal wUl' be -necessary for repair. Tenders might be,. called .for, or would you be prepared to accept any that may be offered at the present price, 4s 6d per cubic yard? The top of the culvert at tbe, foot of Burke's bank being decayed, I have -replaced it by a new one. At Spring Grove I have taken a few bends and bars out of the 40-line brook, and have r improved the. road with the material. It would be advisable to get out sonie mbre^' as the stuff is very good and might be stacked at the railway crossing for patching during the winter at great saving to the Board. The road has been repaired from Mr Painton's corner to the Catholic Church. Mr Joseph Price requests an advance ot £100 .on account of bridge contract at Bell Grove, which is now nearly completed; the approaches on both sides of the river have been touch improved; notice should be sent to the Government of the desirability of painting this bridge at once. The price -of hematite paint is 30s per cwt. The trunk line in Evcb' Valley will soon be impassable, cnused: by .the growth of gorse; , ; the same may be said of several of the bye-roads. I hope, gentlemen, some -definite and prompt measures will be taken with respect to this question , as parties will not clear the gorse until they see what steps the Board is going to take in the matter. Notices to cut and trim gorse, hedges,. _sc, have been sent, and but little heed is taken. The batiks in 'Dovedale, by Mr Burnett's, have been' attended to. A few chains of gravelling should be done by the Dove river on the Moutere road. I have, inspected the lower end of the roaji in Trass's Valley, and find that a box culvert is required on top of the bank, and a coat of gravel from thence to the corner of Mead's fence, a distance of sixteen chains." Resolved, That tenders be invited for next month for the barrel drain at Richmond, apd that the Board find timber for the bridge near Mr Killing's on condition bf the applicants carting it and erecting the bridge; also, that the Board put in the culvert in Trass's Valley, 'and' contribute half the cost of the gravelling. , Resolved,,. That in reference to the gorse nuisance, the Solicitor's opinion be .procured on some selected cases, and if advisable immediate proceedings be taken. ■ '■ ' - Resolved, That the following tenders be accepted, viz, G. A letter was received from D. Johnston, Esq., requesting information as to the existence of rights of road between Stoke and the east endi.of Aniseed Valley, or whether the Board intended taking stepß to secure such rights if not already existing. The Surveyor after reporting progress with regard to the road in the Valley, was directed to procure the information desired. A letter from the Land Commissioner reported that the reserve on the Moutere Hills recommended by the Board has'been, agreed to by the Waste Lands' Board, and that those recom*

mended in Pigeon Valley being on land already leased oould not be entertained, but that the recommendation of any other sites not already appropriated Would be favorably considered.
