EASTER ENCAMPMENT.

The following petition to the Defence Minister has been drawn up, and is being numerously signed. We shall be glad to find that it has the desired effect, for nothing connected with volunteering has been more, popular, or better calculated to increase the efficiency of the force than the Easter Encampment: — To the Honorable Sir Donald M'Leanl K.C.M.G., Defence Minister. " The members of the volunteer ftrces in the Province of Nelson respectfully request the Hon the Defence Minister — " That bis consent be given to an Encampment, to be hpld during Esster week, in the . Province of Nelson; "That his instructions do issue to his Department to encourage such Encampment * by providing all stores needful thereto, including ration allowance; " Th»t all Corps from other provinces have such assistance as his department can provide in joining such Encampment; " That instructions ba issued for forwarding to NeUon the Government tents, now or lately at Wanganui. "The memorialists, in support 'of their petition, submit for the consideration of the Hon the Defence Minister-~(l.) That a large number of the volunteer forces of the colooy are desirous of meeting in the Province of Nelson during Easter week. (2 ) That the experience of the volunteer movement in the home country shows that such Encampments materially increase the efficiency of the corps. (3.) That the Encampments hitherto held in Nelson have been a . marked success. ( _ ) That the present efficiency of the Nelson Volunteer Corps will compare favorably with that of any other corps in the colony. (5.) That the memorialists understand that the Government hesitate making any grant in aid on tbe ground that the tents and other Government stores were damaged during the last Encampment, That they, therefore, respectfully beg that the Hon the Dsfence Minister inquire into the accuracy of the said report, pledging themselves to make good auy damages beyond ordinary wear and tea-".
