**■■■ The N. Z. Times gives the following amusing account of an old gentleman who got into a scrape through taking too much " waipero " as the Maoris call it: —An ancient male, soberly dresßed, and wearing spectacles, got into trouble yesterday in the simplest way possible. Having indulged in too much soothing syrup, he bethought himself of the necessity for obtaining repose; but he did not go horne —better for him if he had. Daniel went into the lion's den; howbeit, he would rather have stopped outside; but this gentleman, to use a vulgar phrase, " took the shine out of " Daniel quite, for he deliberately entered the premises of the police, and retiring into an establishment erected for the express convenience of the noble army of police/there dropped off to sleep. He had been there some time when he waa discovered by the cook, who made the sergeant acquainted with the fact. The sergeant —man. of practical ideas,. unpoetic, but loyal, gave orders for that old gentleman, spectacles and all, to be placed in a compartment where he would be quite as comfortable, and more secure. mamnm^mmmmmn^mm^mmmmmmmmmm^m—^mmm—mmmmm^mmmam
