To the Editor of the ' Evening Mail.'

Sir —Being a member of the Local Committee I consider v my duty to bring be'ore the proper authorities the great want of a better water supply at the school house Motupiko Valley, the present well being in a most dangerous condition. It wa9 sunk through a fo->t of clay on to shingle, being about 2 ft 6in in diameter at top, and 14 feat deep The diameter at the top still rera -ins the same, but at the bottom there is room enough to turn a turn a horse and cart, the gra*el hating tumbled in and been removed from time to time at the expense of the teacher, so that at present it is a yawning pit dangerous beyond all description, where there are children particularly, ss the undermined wood work is ready to precipitate to the bottom the first person that approaches it. One child bus already fallen in, and there is no telling how sion others may come to grief. I htve brought this matter before the Chairman of the Committee with a requajt that he will inform the Central Bo.«rd of it, but hs h»s neglected to do sr>, and therefore I adopt this means of acquainting them with the danger. Being constabla of the district I may be called upon nnr day to hold an inquest upon the dead bodies of mr own children through the neglect of others. I think it shameful th*t such a trap for the destruction of children nhould be allowed to exißt on a Nelson school ground. Tho late teacher has told me ttiat nothing but the rod and her strict attention h*s kept them from wandering nigh to the gaping hols, which could be made snfe for thirty shillings. I am, &c, William Gibbs. Motupiko, Feb. 24. Cry,,.: ..-„ IIIIIIIWHIIIIBI II 111
