A Wellington telegram to the Auckland Star says : — " The police are confident they have got a trace of Winiata, the Epsom murderer, and tbey think they will manage to apprehend bim. It appears that he has come right through the Napier province, travelling on horseback, accompanied by a native woman also mounted. He has money, and apparently avoids Maori settlements. An Auckland man (for whose father Harry at one time worked at Onehunga) is positive as to the man. For obvious reaeoob, tbe police do not desire any further particulars to be made known at present." A minister who bad been reproving one of his elders for over-indulgence, observed a cow go down to a stream, take a drink, aud then turn away. '"There," said he to hiß offending elder, ".is an example for 'you ; the cow has quenched its thirst, and has retired." "| Yes," replied the other, " that ia very true ; but suppose another cow bad co ono to the other side of the stream, and said, 'Here's to you,' there's no saying how long they might have gone on."
