7^-_he steamer Edinburgh sailed for Sydney this morning, and was followed in the afternoon by the Hibernia, which for the arrival of the Taupo from Wellington, Mr. Lawes, the chief electrician, being a passenger by her. The fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held last night. A letter was read from Mr T. Mackay relative to the extension of the railway to the port, and a deputation was appointed to wait upon him and the Superintendent with reference to the matter. The draft of a gorse nuisance bill was read, and after some discussion its consideration was postponed. Instructions were given to the Town Clerk to write to the General Government asking when the contributions in proportion to the rates collected would be paid. The Council then adjourned. The anniversary of the Richmond Wesleyan Church will be celebrated by a tea meeting on Wednesday evening next. A special train will leave Nelson at 5 p.m., returning at 10 p.m. The Nelson Wesleyan choir will give musical selections duriug the evening. Sermons in connection with the above will be preached by the Rev. W. Keall tomorrow. Mr Hodder will preach at the Temperance Hall to-morrow evening. A seetice will be held at the Gospel Hall, Wakefield, to-morrow morning. A seryioe will be conducted in the Baptist Church, Richmond, to-morrow afternoon, at half-past two o'clock, by the Rev. D. Dolamore. The twenty-fourth anniversary of the Hope Sunday School will take place on Sunday, when a sermon will be preached in the morning by the Rev. D. Dolamore, and on the following Tuesday a tea meeting will be held, when addresses will be delivered. The tender of Bethwaite & Roberfc--1 son for the erection of Post and Tele- ' graph offices at Foxhill, has been acj cepted. , The entertainment which was to i have been given by the Nelsou Artizans' Association a week ago, but was un--1 avoidably postponed, will take place at | the Oddfellows' Hall on Monday night. As the proceeds will be devoted to the purchase of new books for the library, ' we have no doubt that the efforts of the members will be rewarded with a crowded house. T. .. . _ M
