Valuable mining plants for sale. Pour of them in the market at once, all within a hundred miles of Nelson. I hope the auctioneers in whose hands they have been placed for disposal will make lots of money out of the sales, but I would much rather not see such advertisements in the papers. To say the least, they do not look well for the development of our mineral resources, of which we talk so much. I don't know much about the Northumberland mine, but I do remember seeing some richly gold-studded 'pieces ot stone from the Decimal, and I have heard that when there was only one share remaining for sale the competition for it was so keen that lots were cast to decide who should be the fortunate possessor, aud that those who lost the golden chance were terribly down in the mouth over it. Here was a certain fortune placed almost within their reach

and then suddenly snatched money from them. Poor fellows ! However, t it may perhaps be some slight consolation to them to see* in the. papers that the machinery which was to crush the quartz that was to produce the gold that was to fill tbeir purses, was to be put up to auction on a certain day at a certain hour M;T. About the CulHford I regret to say that I know something more, aud I can remember the time when an excited horseman galloped into town and proclaimed far and wide that the drive, in the light of two or three sperm candles, looked like an adjective jeweller's shop. Ob, what a fortune I wns going to make in about a year ! How I dipped into the future, and B aw' myself driving about in a handsome carriage with a flash team in front of me, and all the little world of Nelson smiling upon me, and my brother shareholders, all of whom were millionaires. And the end of all my dreams is— Bah 2 Could anything be more humiliating? — " Important sale of mining plant, &c. By order of the liquidator of the CulHford Gold Mining Company (Registered)." No more gold mining for me.
