THE PEOPLE OF NELSON AND THE HOPE ROAD.

To the Editor o_ tub ' Evexing- Mail ' Sir — At the very time that the rxnts? for not doing much that thy public convenience requires in the w*y of road making his been that there was •• no money," parties of nun have been constantly employed, and considerable contract"? have been from time to time let, in patching up and improving the Big Bush— Blick Valley—Devil's Grip rtmd; and this in spite of it being very well known that if the Hope road was made passable for di .ys, none but one or two private drnys and vehicles, would use the other road at all. Tho Lake Hill road (part and parcel of the Big Bush road) controversy must be fredi in your readers' minds. Who thinks of using or defending this rond now ? The thousands of pounds that have been spent on this twenty miles of road are as utterly wasted an anything could be, and all people can say about it now is, Why was it ever made? Ani yet this piece of folly was with difficulty exposed, and tbe waste of other thousands on it prevented. At this present time the public weal demands that the Hope road should be coinpletel, nnd tbat the public moneys th<>t Jare about being epe-it in the Big Bum and at Devil's Grip on the road the people do rot want should he spent in the Hope instead. But no, the trade and commerce of Nelson, the carters, the general advancement of the province even, are of If ss considerate. n than what ? — something eertainlv.'and tbat something inimical to the public good. If the people would only once insis*. on having the public moneys spent so as to do " the greatest good for the greatest numb?r" we should he ;r no more of such scandal as roads being taken over Lake Hills, aud by Devil's Grips, w hen far belter routes were avavable, a n d it is with the view of amusing some such interest on behalf of public matters and the Hope Road that I have troubled you with these remarks. — I am, &c, Jambs Grovb. Foxhill, Feb. 19, 1876.
