La parole, c est comme Targent, mais le silence, e'eat comme l'or. Peutetre me dira-t-on, alors tais-toi, et pratique toi-meme ta belle maxirae. Mais comme Francais, je ne peux pas me taire. Les Francais sont nes bavards, comme les Anglais sont nes moqueurs. Un de roes amis, il y a quelques jours, in'a dit qui'l avait lu a une occasion dans Blackwood quelquechose d'amusant au sujet des salutations diverses des nations differentes. J'ai essaye de le persuader de composer ]adessns une jolie petite " Causerie," mais tous mes efforts etaient infructueux. Mettant les salutations de cote, il y-a d'autres diversites par Jesquelles les nations differentes se distinguent. Les Francais sont jaseurs, les Anglais rieurs, les Allemandes fumeurs, les Espagnols jureurs, les Americains cracheurs, et ainsie de suite. II me parait que les Francais, en examinant attentivement la liste, sont places au plus haut degre apres tout. N ? est-ce pas la parole que le genre bumaio se distingue des autres animaux ? II y a des animaux qui rient et il y en a qui se moquent, d'autres viennent a bout |de fumeur et d'y savourer des delices, il y cn a qui crachent et cela quelquefois tres-adroitement ; il yen a meme qui font des grognements sourds semblables a des jurons. mais il n'y en a point qui parlent. li faut faire exception peut-etre vis-a-vis du phoque matin exhibe a Londres, mais e'est une exception qui ne tient guere bon, car la plupart des gens qui l'ont vu et entendu, out dit que ce n'elait pas parler mats grogner. II est bien vrai qu'on peut enseigner aux perroquets a dire quelques mots, mais personne, j'espere, ne sera assez hardi ponr Boutenir qu'ils comprennent ce qu'ils disent. Il reste encore a citer l'ane de Balaam ! C'etait par un miracle sans doute qu'il regut pour un moment le don de ia parole et l'occasion e'tait ttessolennelle ; mais il etonna son noaitre autant par le fait meme de pouvbir parler que par les paroles memes, et si Balaam n'elait pas trop bete a du lui prouver que lui, le pauvre ane etait le moins ane des deux. Vive le genie Francais .
