"whiSb^has been-greltfia'iaCawnporo in| memory of those who were victims of of the treacherous scoundrel Nana Sahib durinp the Indian Mutiny :— " The name of the Memorial Church of /Cawnpore ;'is known 'to evißry Anglo- _, Inilmn, aml'to thousands of Jfcn|»lishmen who have naver set foot in India. For the Jast fourteen years it has been asßociated in the public mind with the clu'efest -and most mournful tragedy which tno history of Anglo-India records; But in spite of the universal interest in the Memorial Church and the universal longing for its completion it has only now been finished; nnd its consecratioQ did not take place until <: Wedrie'sday last, • If -we are not mistaken, the Anglo-Indian public — or rather the English-speaking public, wherever it may be — chiefly owes this consummation of the work to the present Lieutenant-Governor of tbeae provinces. As the date of the consecrntion was made known before-hand throughout the leading towns and stations, hundreds of visitors presented themselves at the church ■ doors on Wednesday morning, by about ten o'clock. The sermon was preached by Dr.TMilman, Bishop of Calcutta; and;: ■Metropolitan of India and Ceylon, who', in very touching and impressive terms alluded to the Bad story -which AH Souls Church has been built to commemorate. The church is built in the. middle of the site of the entrenchment , in which General Wheeler and his heroesrrr-and our countrywoman, and their children as heroic even as they— defied throughout the long, terrible, weeks the fiercest onsets of the Nana and hiß army. Close to two of the four corners of the church stand the two great tombs containing the bones of those who first died or were killed during the J siege, as also of Colonel Vibarf, the officers and men who were brought back captive to the Nana after the ambuscade and massacre on the Ganges. The splendid line of new barracks intervenes betweenthe church and the Sivada House, where the Nana dwelt, and Colonel Vtbart and his companions were murdered. , About -a mile to the north lies the fatal ghat; and about the aame distance to the west are the beautifully kept gardens with their Memorial Well." Everyone who could possibly spare the time inajde a pilgrimage to the church on consecration day." .
