CORRESPONDENCE BE THE LANDING OF THE CABLE.

"We have been requested to. publish the following letters which passed between the Mayor and Superintendent relative to the landing of the submarine cable: — C;ty Council Chamber Nelson, ■ 10th February, 1876. Sir— As a feeling seems to exist amongst the general public that some demonstration should be tanie upon the occasion of (he completion of the laying of the submarine cable between Australia and the ! colony, which will bring us -into direct communication with the hotm country, I hive the honor to enquire, whether it is the intention 0/ the Provincial Government to take any stpps in this matter, and, if so, to aßsuro your Honor of the hearty co-operation of the City Council and myself. Sir— -In answer to your letter of yesterday's d-ite, iv which you ask if it ii the intention of the Provincial Government to take any steps iv reference to the landing of the submarine cable at Wakapuakn, I have the honor to ttite that it is not the intention of the Prvincial Government to take any official action on the occasion relerred to.
