The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1876.
Sir Julius .Yogel arrived in the Arawata thia morning, but did not land. The Superintendent, the Hon Major Richmond, C.8., and several other gentlemen visited him onboard, but there was no public demonstration of any kind. Siu Julius Yogel is likely to be heartily greeted by a certain class in Wellington this evening. Our telegrams tell us that, after much division and discussion in the Committee, it has been decided that there shall be a free supply of beer at: the street corners. Under such circumstances the reception will probably become more and more, enthusiastic in proportion to the number of street corners that are passed by the procession. Dr. Lemon and Mr Shapley arrived by the Wellington this morning, and proceeded overland to Wakapuaka, where the Luna has been discharging telegraph poles and materials for erectiug cottages for the operators and others engaged on the line. The Luna came on to Nelson this afternoon, as she has a number of poles. on board for this end of the line. The cricket match between the town and country butchers yesterday, after a most pleasant day's play, terminated in favor of the countrymen by 32 runs. The Artillery Band was in attendance during the afternoon, and at the close of the game, the two elevens, with musical accompaniment, paraded the streets, and finally sat down to a capital dinner at the Trafalgar Hotel. The return match will be played shortly, •when a closer contesfi is expected. Mr .Robert Thomas Sadd, who received his education at the Bridge-street School: andiNelson College, has passed both the junior and senior Civil Service examination, , occupying in each an' honorable position among the competitors. . The annual tea party in connection with the Nelson Sunday School Society was given last night, when over two huridred children sat down to the plentiful supply of good things for them, and the real business being thus disposed of, the fun of the evening comh menced, the' principal feature being the drawing for the prizeson a lofty and well arranged Christmas Tree, which was brilliantly lighted with tapers, backed by glittering reflectors, and laden with the gifts that were to delight the youngsters' hearts. To Mr Campbell, to whom the main work connected with this Sunday School has been a labor of love for the last 33 years, and to all those who have assisted, and are still assisting him are due the hearty thanks of the parents of those who have received, and are now receiving, their religious instruction at this institution. Bko. J. T. Smith, assisted by Bros. Cooper, of Wellington, and Bond, installed last night the following officers of the Union of Nelson Degree Temple : — D.T., Bro. J. 8. Jones ; D.V.T., Bro.
