The Hibernia and Edinburgh were to start from Botany Bay on the cable laying expedition last Saturday. The time of their arrival here will, of course, depend yery largely upon the weather.

There were eight. debt cases set down for hearing afc the liesident -Magistrate'-* Court this morning, but all of them were settled out of Cour*. Sir Julius Vo =el is' a passenger on board Jthe N Arawata, which left Greymouth for Nelson this morning, and will arrive early to-morrow. The monthly meeting of the Auxiliary Fire Brigade, was held at their Hall, the Port, on Monday evening. There was. a, large atten dance of membersj Captain J Garrard in the chair. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. The Secretary read the two following resolutions received from the Town Brigade :—-!." Thafc no further expenses be incurred on behalf of the Auxiliary Brigade unless the number of members be reduced to twelve." 2. " Thafc the Auxiliary Brigade cannot receive any further assistance from this Brigade until fchey enrol themselves as members of this Brigade." After a short discussion, in which all the members took parfc, the' following resolutions were carried unanimously: — 1. " Thafc this Brigade is of opinion that in view of there always being some of the members absent from fires, this Brigade considers ifc unadvisable to reduce their number." 2. " That this Brigade cannot conveniently attend the meetings in town, as nearly all the members are working men residing afc the Porfc, and thafc therefore they -consider that they can best serve the public by continuing to work as the Nelson Auxiliary Volunteer Fire Brigade." 3. "That Messrs J. Lukins, J. Infield, and W. {Simpson be a Committee to wait upon the City , Council and the various Insurance Offices, and persons willing to aid this Brigade in continuing the good work begun by them in fl868." The Brigade wished it. to be made public that they have .to: a considerable extent been dependent upon their members' fund in case of accident* there- hot being one fraction in hand towards a reserve fund. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the "proceedings. . The volunteers of the district will attend a divine service parade on Sunday next, meeting afc the Post Office afc 330 p.m., when fchey will march to.the ground in front , of the Police Station, for service at 4 p.m. A collection will . be made in aid of the funds of the Hospital and Lunatic Asylum, and for so laudable an object a full muster is expected. The corps from Stoke will attend, and as the service will be an open air one the novelty will doubtless attract many who may wish to add to the collection. ■■" ■ T
