GOOD NEWS FROM THE LYELL.
The following telegram from a correspondent = reached us last night : — '" Mashail and James' have just brought in three nuggets, weighing' respectively 74, ;48, and' 38 ounces, found at the head of Irishman's Creek." Is it too much to regard this as the commence-, mept of a better state, of affairs in a province that looks almost entirely to its mineral resources for its future prosperity?- _ : . -

Sm Donald M'Lean has intimated to the Inspector of Schools -in Otago that it is intention to have printed an. epitome of the, history of New Zealand, written by Mr Alex. Mackay, for the use of. schools. Such a work should be very useful.
Next to the " respectable dodge " — the mendicant family, all dressed Jin patched but scrupulously clean clothing —the following little device adopted by one who has chosen Glasgow as the scene of his operations, seems to deserve such encomiums as may be lavished on ingenious rascality. A poorly dressed man is Been standing on the pavement wistfully eyeing a dirty piece of crust lying thereon. Hunger evidently struggles in the frame of this destitute putcast with the ', more potent will which scorns to gratify, it at the cost of all self, respect. Casting furtive glanceß 'around, he seems to deprecate the.publicgaze, and to make up his mind to take the loathsome but necessary morsel unobserved. Then, apparently unconscious that the eye of a sympathising bystander is fixed upon his movements, he lifts; the crust, and is about to devour the un tempting prize . when the witness of his surrender, convinced that 'be is,starving, presses a small sum of "money upon his ; acceptance. The action becomes! however, rather complicated when the benefactor happens to seethe same drama repeated in the next street, the dirty crust, the wistful glances, the final submission to overmastering hunger, aud, of Jcourse, tbe assistance tendered by the distressed witnesses of the scene. Then follow attentions from the police'to the vicinity of adversity, and warning paragraphs such as; have spoilt the game of this G liswegian scam p. iEgles relates the following in the Australasian: — A late traveller in the Western district was strqck by the absence of the usual teeselated language of the bullock driver in the case of a roan on the road with a small feani, which, he thus apostrophised, "Come hither Baptist I Woo- o-o! Presbyterian," &c. This mode of address seemed so strange, to the traveller that he entered info conversation with the man, and asked him how these titles were applicable to a bullock . team. '' Well sir, you see I calls this the 'cleaaiasitcal team. You see that bullock leading on the off side; I calls him Baptist. We'll. be crossing the creek presently, he'll be bound to make for water. That one on the near side he's 'Piscopalian, because he holds his head so werry higl 1 . That bnllock on the off side of the pole •—•the one with the crumpled born— l calls him Presbyterian. .He's the most out-and-out knowing bullock of the lot The brindlejn the same yoke with him, he's Wesleyan. He'a always a-grunting an<| a-groaning as if he was dragging Bless yoiir life, sir, •Jt*^S^^B an ounce."
