For inherent cruelly (eaysa writer in. the JV. Z. Times) commend to me tbe average Cockney. They have a couple of seals on the Luna— -animals with eyes soft enough to excite pity in a bull dog. During the process of fitting up the gear for repairing the cable, these seals in their cage have been temporarily deposited on the quay opposite the Telegraph Office. Yesterday I found a few gentlemen around this cage, engaged in the appropriate Christmas pastime of poking their sticks into the seals' eyes and otherwise mal-treating them, I asked the object of this, and was answered, ** So as to /ear 'em bark; they bark like dawgs." I enquired what the experimenters would do if shut up in cages and beaten with sticks. One of them said, •' What would you do?" Not beiDg usually at a loss for an answer, I replied, " Bite you ugly nose off and poison myself with the morsel." The Dunstan Times, to show how prolific is the growth of strawberries in the Duostan district, states that Mr Ivereon has three-quarters of an acre laid down with these plants, from which, he has taken I7cwt of fruit during the past fortnight. . ,
