Th.*re wis grea'. excitement whtn Mr Watson m'.rahalleJ Ins forces to the post, and after one or two liitle feints, a stentorian shout pronounced the commencement of the iight fir the turf championship o£ 1876. The "ritiaher, ProtoMartyr, who was rid kn without a martingale, nt once overpowered Yexnans, and cut out the running at a terrific pa'-e, Emulation and Calumny oeing hia Immediate followers for somo time, and the Englishman continued to lead until at one time hi* countrymen thought he was going to win the Ch-impion Race just sa Sultan won the Midsummer Handicap, hut as ho approached the abattoirs the second time round he began to hang out signals of distress, and B.lla, M*id of all Work, Calumny, Kichmond, Robin Hooi, Melbourne, and Burgundy getting together, with Goldsbrough close, a maunifl.ent race ensued. Bella for some time looked more dangerous than anything, but she juat lacked that little bit of condition to brinsr her home, and as they swept into the straight, the loui shouts thit proc'aimel success to Goldsbrough,Riobmond, ani Maid-of-A.ll- Work, were sufficient to prove to the most superficial of observers ; th*it the battle had not yet been w_m. Inch by inch the two three year olds drew away from Mr Tait's grand horse and ihe others, and the prospects of victory seerne.l to be evenly balanced until the gallant Richmond an.werei Hales's resolute call, and drawing away in quite his old style, he cloverly won the Champion Stakes of 1876, an J though the second money seemed a certainty for Maid-of-All Work; Ashworth. with one of those brilliant flashes of horse l.anship for which he is so famous, brought up Gold_.br mgh and gained the 200 sovs for second horse by a head, and th-it hea'l was AshworLh's, tor ha*l the boy on the Maid been able td finish, he must have been tc ond, Bella ran a gcol fourth, and thns proved herself a filly of great excellence. Richmond's victory was received with cb.ers, but the ovation was as nothing compared to that which would have greeted Mr Tait had Goldsbrough won, yet though defeated, the great son of Fireworks was not di-'graced, as it must be admittel that the three year oWs had at loa.t 71b advantage in the wei_rht.. This was Rici>mon*i'a eleventh race during the present seison, and it is worthy of remark thit it was his pixth victory, he having obtained second place in. all of the other contests In which he took pare since the opening of the campaign 1875-6.
