. - -Dunbdjn Saturday. The steomer Matau was launched to day at Pelichet Bay. She has been built for G. F. Reid, for the Dunedin and Molyne^ux trade, and is the largest iron steamer built in the colonies. Her dimensions are—length of keel, I27ft; overall, 133ft; beam, 1811; hold, 7lt 9in. The saloon on dpek will contain twenty sleeping births. She will be fitted with compound engines 150 horse power. Her average speed is ten knots, and she is built in five water-tight compartments. Mrs Keid christened the boat, and the launching was carried out moßt successfully. The argument in the case of Jenkins for arsin, is postponed till Wednesday. The Judge baa admitted him to bail in bis own recognisances. Me ■ lay. The returns from Queonstown show Wanders, provinciali&t, to have a majority of SO orer Bradshaw. Two or three small returns are yet to come in but they will in no way affect the result. Giuhamstown, Saturday. It is reported that Howe's election is protested against, on the ground that he and his committee had.a room in a public bouse. ' Jt is als3 stated that Mitchell has protested against Sir Julius Vogel'a return, but the grounds of this protest are not yet made known. In reference to Sir George Grey being unseated, the following telegram appears in to-night's Star, Auckland:—-I have consulted May's Parliamentary practice, and it upholds my opinion about an elected member being ineligible for a second seat unless he resigns his first seat previous to nomination, Le^al authority here is against Grey's election fox the Thames. I will maintain my protest against his return.—James Maokay. Chbistchubck, Saturday. In the representative firing by the cavalry and artillery, Fox made 183, Burnett 167, Arson 161, Faton 160, Hill 156, Dunbar 153, Haven 144, and Judge 129.
