NELSON REGATTA.

Tire weather^yisterdiy, J|iich had been far from pleasant or gcduuspg on the previous' nigi^t, clearld up to allow of % s yei^agreeable da^Mr the regatta^ Vhiciriproved so^^idld^ii success that w^ feel justified in offering the suggestion that next year an intorprovincial regatta should for the first time beheld in Nelson. The crowd^)f excursionists that visited us from Welflngton on thej oc<jakorij)f what was, '•nothing -more- thani-a- *third 'or fourth rate' regatta shows that if one were got up on a larger and more liberal scale we should have the pteasute^f entertaining atilliargenram-" bers from other parts of the colony. About double the araonnt tHaS'was subscribes otf the present dccasion* would be necessary, ana there certainly should be no,; djfficultjr m way of raising such a sum. Just now,"how^ everavre must feel satisfied with throwing out the hint, as our business is more with yesterday's than next year's ' racing. Between ten and eleven o'clock the people,, began to flock down to the port tyt hundreds, trad for some^hours railway busses anaimbs were crowded, and the proprietors thereof jnust, we feel sure, he hearty admirers and supporters of regattas in Nelson. Towards the afternoon the harbor. and surrounding bills presented a very pretty- ajid aflima^ sight. All the vessels in harbor had every stitch of bunting flying, and.the, wharyes and steamers that moored 'at thent^ere crowded with sight seers, while the hill sides were dotted over with picnic parties, many of whom had set up .their r tents- and-estab-lished themselves- in < comfortable $*siti6ns, f from whence to view the racing. The fine band of the Wellington Artillery, whose performances were, a real treat to listen to, played duf ing the day 911 board the fHaweaji and the Nelson Artillery Band on the Go-: vernment wharf. The anticipation was very general that the Nelson crews would not be able to hold their own against the more practised rowers from across the Straits, and odds were freelyi given, on one. or two occasions of which we heard as high as 5 to 11 against our; local men. It wag, therefore, with no little surprise that from the moment the gun fired for the start for the Champion Whalehoat Eace, the Thistle, manned by a strong Nelson crew consisting of Messrs Cak der (stroke), J., T., arid A. Brdwn,,Westrupp, and Johnson (coxswain),- was seen to go to the front, and continued to increase her lead the whole way. until she came in?a winner :by l£ minutes, amid the loud cheers of the crowd of excited spectators who lined the wharves and swarmed on the steamers. It was a most unexpected triumph, and should have the effect of inducing the boating men of Nelson to go in steadily for practice, for if, without it, they, were able to gain such a victory yesterday, they might, with: it, 1 'nope to win some of the larger prizes , that are offered in other parts of -the: colony. J The Amateur Whaleboat Bace was another victory for the-Nelson boat Thistle, manned hy Messrs White . (stroke), , r Gilbertgod* «&), Calder(2),aiid 'Srmpsbn (coxswain.)- Therace possessed but little interest, as the Thistle had it> aH her own way from the first, the ; Wellington .boats being unable, tp approach her at all. .Between two and three o'clock the harbor looked reinarkaWy pretty, the sailing boats for the first and second class races having been despatched on their various .errands, their whiter sails being spread" to the utmost extent to, . "take every advantage of the steady breeze' that was blowing. The yacht race excited a good deal of interest, as the Bed Jacket had been brought over from Wellington specially, to tackle the dangerous little Minuehaha, but it was of no avail, for, whether it was owing to the superior skill and knowledge of local currents possessed by Mr Cross, who sailed her, or to her own merits, the Laughing Water was too much for all her opponents, and won as she pleased. The four-oared race resolved itself into a' cotitest, between the two Wellington boats 1 Queen Mab and Star, as Mr Taylorte new hoati the Anonyma,. filled in rounding the buoj', andhad tobe run ashore. The whole of. the arrangements were carried out in the. most satisfactory manner, thanks to the members of the committee, who stuck, to their 1 posts and: used every possible eifort to ensure success. It Avas ho light task they had undertaken^ and right well did they carry it out. In the afternoon there were various shore sports, and- On the whole the day was without exception the most enjoyable one of the kind that has been known in Nelson.
