The Nelson Eveening Mail. MONDAY, DECEMBER 27, 1875.
The second anniversary of the introduction of the Independent Order of Good Templary into Nelson will be celebrated by a public tea meeting in the Temperance Hail at five o'clock this evening. This will be followed by a public meeting, when several gentlemen are expected fo occupy the platform. The examination papers having come in from the schools in all parts of the province, the Provincial Government scholarships have been awarded as follows :— The first to T. Fleming, of Wesfcport, who succeeded in obtaining 551 out of a possible total of 600 marks, and the second to J. Myers, ot Motueka, who secured 471 marks. Bullard of Motueka, and Feist of Richmond are recommended for such marks of recognition as it is in the power of the Central Board to bestow. Mr Seaton, a Provincialisr, has beaten Mr Cargill for the Caversham seat. Dr Henry is opposing Mr O'Conor for the Buller seat in the House of Representatives. The latter gentleman, we are informed, has declared himself to be in favor of the retention of provincial institutions, but we have not yet received a report of his speech to the electors at the nomination, which took place on Wednesday last. His election is considered safe.
