CENTRAL BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The usual monthly meeting of the Central Board was held yesterday. Present — Messrs Barnicoat (chairman), Rout, Wastney, Campbell, the Bishop of Nelson, Martin, Talbot, Webster, Bundle, Patti*, Smith, Holder, Burn, CressweH, Sinamous, Shephard, Thorpe, and Malcolm. Resolved, That a sum not exceeding £40 he set npart for repairing the master's houae at Riwaka, and for obtaining 0 supply of water, provided the Riwaka Committee senJ in to the Finance Committee a satiefaqtory detailed estimate of the probable expenditure. Kesolved, that a further sum of £12 be allowed tho Riwaka Committee, on the same terms, to enable them to eularge Brooklyn School. Resolved, That the salary of the master Of tho school about to be opened at the Aorere be fixed at £125, exclusive of the usual rent allowance of £24; in all £149 per annum. Resolved, Thnt £20 be allowed for clearing No 24 (5 acree), the school reserve at the Karaniea, oh the understanding that the Provincial Government will put up a suitable schoolroom on the reserve. A letter, was read from the Lower Takaka Committee, stating that Mr Hume bad been temporarily . appointed as master without a certiflcate, in the absence of any properly qualified candidate; but. that he was prepared to undergo an examination at Christmas. . It was resolved that the usual rate of salary be paid to the Committee in January, when the Secretary shall have ascertained the precise amountto which Mr Hume will, then be entitled. Resolved, after a- division, That the following report of the Finance Committee be adopted :— Ayes.- 7: Messrs Webster, Smith, Rout, Wastney, Talbot, Shephard, and Simmons. - Noes, 6: Messrs Campbell, Malcolm, Burn, Creswell, Buddie, aud Bishop of Nfclaoo. " That the circumstances of Mr Barnett's case are not exceptionally hard, inasmuch as there are twenty-five other teachers who could urge equal claims to consideration. That however desirous your Committee may be to inincrease all these salaries, the funds will not at present admit of their doing "They therefore recommend that no salary be increased during the present financial year, and that Mr Baroett's salary be retained at the earae amount as it was prior to the resolution of September 2." .
