CENTRAL BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The usual monthly meeting of the abeve was held yesterday. Present : Mesars Barnicoat (chairman, Campbell, Buddie, tbe Bishop of Nelson, Burn, Webster, Dencker, Smith, Pattie, Hill, Malcolm, Talbot, Simmons, Thorpe, Holder, and Atkinson. Minutes of laat raeeUag read and confirmed.
The question of classifying schools was again postpoaed. The report of tho Finance Committee upon the salary of the master of Stoke School waa read. The further consideration of the matter wea postponed until next meeting. Resolved ou the motion of the Bishop of Nelson, that a permanent SubCommittee be appointed, to whom may be referred such matters ns the Board tony determine respecting the erection, maintenance, and alterations of buildings and other property of the Board, and that the member for lhe district concerned io any matters referred by tho Board be for the time an ex-officio member thereof; also, that Messrs Kout, Broad, Fell, Bum, and the mover, be members of the Committee. Resolved, that the following suggestions of the Inspector as to the Preparatory School be adopted, lat. That the girla attending the Preparatory School remaio, under the charge of a mistress, in the present schoolroom; the name of 3rd division, Hardy-street, being substituted for that of Preparatory School. 2 id. transferred to a room to be built adjoining the Bridge-street Schools, and to be called tbe 4th division, Bridgestreet. 3rd. That the new school be taught by a mistress and assistant. The plans aod specifications for the proposed school-room were referred to the Permanent Sub-Committee. The plans and specifications of the Addition to the Upper Moutere School wero approved hy the Board, aod a snm of £100 was set apart for the work. Resolved, That the question of an addUion to the Haven Road School, or "the erection or renting of a school-room at the Port be referred to the permanent Bub-committe tp report thereon. The Secretary was instructed to ackhowledge tbe receipt of a letter , from the Cobden Committee, declining to re-admit Mr Djinan'a children. ■£25 was allowed to defray the cost of the Inspector's special visit to the West Coast schools in November. Mr, Campbell's motion as to the abolition of augmentation having been discussed it'was resolved, after a division, that (his matter be postponed until the hoard has decided as to the classification of schools Ayes, 8: Messrs Webster, Burn, Holder, Simmons, Thorpe, Aikinson, Campbell, aqd Malcolm. Noes, 5: Messrs Pattie, Buddie, Talbot, Deocker, and Bishop of Nelson. A letter was read from the Karamea School Committee, reqoesting the Board's assistance in putting up a suitable school 'room. The Secretary was instructed to explain to the applicants that the Board has no power to expend money in buildings beyond the limits of education districts. ff\ Tho Secretary was instructed to have the boundaries* of the newly-constituted districts of Aorere gazetted. Resolved, tbat the examiners, Messrs Simmpnds and Hodgson, be empowered to, appoint subjects for the scholarships? examination, 1876. Resolved, that it be an instruction to the Board of Examiners to consider whether the augmentation of the teachOrss' salaries should be based on other' principles than that of numbers only, and whether a system of augmentation depending on the classification of. teachers according to their length of service, the efficiency of their schools, the numbers present at inspection, and the average attendance, can be incorporated with the scheme now uuder the, consideration of the Board of Examiners. ' ' Resolved, That the Inspector be inBtrnc__d • to ascertain " the desirableness of Reefton being constituted an education district. The following notices of motion were given :— 1. By Mr Hill: "That £3 4s. be allowed for fencing tbe half of the northern side of Spring Grove Schoolground'.'' 2. By Mr Burn: "That a cheque for £12 103 be paid to the Town Committee, to enable them to defray the additional cost of temporary assistance at the 3rd division of Bridge-street School; this being the amount saved to the Board by the Inspector's taking charge of the Ist division, Bridge-street School, in July, 1875." By Mr. Pattie: "That £40 be set apart for alterations to the teacher's hpqser at Riwaka, and to procure a supply of good water j also, that £12 be allowed to defray tbe cost of enlarging Brooklyo School-room." - BdPk overdraft, Nov. 3, £230 7s 4d. - The Board then adjourned.
