The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1875.
Since we last adverted to the subject of the silver lode at Richmond Hill, the discoverer has obtained a large lease, and active steps are being taken to obtain the aid of capital to develop the mine without loss of time. The Waste Lands Board deserve commendation for dealing with Mr Washbourn's application in a liberal spirit, considering the unusual difficulties attendant on the first development of a new line of industry. If this, the " pioneer " silver mine, is a success, we may be quite sure that it will be only the first of many more. The matter is engaging the attention of the scientific authorities of the colony, aad we believe Mr Cox, the Assistant Geologist, may be expected this week in Nelson, whence he will proceed to Collingwood to make a report on Richmond Hill and adjacent country bordering on the Para Para river. The anniversary tea meeting of the Baptist Church, Bridge-street, was held yesterday evening in the Temperance Hall yesterday evening, and was largely attended. After tea the congregation assembled in the church, where excellent addresses were delivered by Mr H. C. Daniell, Major Paton, and the Rev. T. Buddie, the Rev. D. Dolamore, the pastor of the church, presiding. Pavorable reports were given of the state of the church and Sunday school. The choir, assisted by a few Christian friends of other denominations, sung a most appropriate selection of sacred music with very pleasing effect. The whole of the service was of a cheering character. About £50 had been expended in the past year on repairs and improvements in the building, and a small sum remained against the church at the commencement of the anniversary services, which the proceeds of the services will cover.
Attention is called fco the Caledonian Society's advertisement relative to the payment of members' subscriptions for the current year. The Directors are desirous of ascertaining the probable amount of subscriptions without delay, as they are anxious to make the Gathering on New Tear's Day even more successful than those which have preceded it, and to offer liberal prizes in order to induce training and keen competition for all the events of the day. Hitherto the payments at the gate and other items of revenue outside members' subscriptions have failed to produce a sufficient amount to meet all the expenses contingent upon the Gathering, and it is hoped that in order to enable the Directors to carry out their intentions the request for the payment of subscriptions wili be liberally and promptly responded to.
A Bazaar in aid of All Saints' Church is to be held in the Provincial Hall on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday next, at which, in addition to the work of those who have been interesting themselves in the matter for several months, a number of articles imported from England for the purpose wili be offered for sale. It is proposed, too, to add a novel feature to the bazaar which should enhance ita attractiveness considerably. The photographic and other views, at which the public had but a brief glance last year, with the addition of several others, will be exhibited in a portion of the Hall, so that those who please may enjoy a quiet study of them, and revive pleasant memories of scenes visited long ctgo, and, in order to make a variety, the views will be changed each day. On Monday, the subjects will be: — Italy, especially Venice, (not yet exhibited), Florence, Rome, Naples, and Pompeii • on Tuesday, England, especially London and Cambridge, and New Zealand will furnish the subjects of the illustrations; and on Wednesday there will be shown views of Palestine, Egypt, and the Holy Land, and some beautiful copies of the Palseographical Society's publications; a copy of the Doomsday Book, and a set of views of Asia Minor, just published, and some exquisite views photographed on glass.
