The similarity of weights in the (wo handicaps shews clearly that one fyas been copied from the other, the slight difference between the two being only a make-believe of independent judgment. All the races at the Wellington maetiogs. are haodicaps except the Derby, and a race for local horses. The acceptances for the Canterbury Handicap, Derby, and Cup, and the entrances for the weight for age race, published by us yesterday, promise a highly successful meeting. The Waimea colt, Kauri, lately sold by Mr Bedwopd, is lame, and h&s been scratched for his engagements at Riccarton. The entrances for the Dunedin Cup, to be ran for on the 23rd of March, number forty two, which we believe to be the greatest number erer entered for a race in New Zealand. A great many of these horses have evidently only been entered to swell the list, and will never go into training. For the last Cup thirty-one horses entered, but only eight started. Thirteen of the present lot are unknown to us by name, and most of these and some of the others would stand* no chance in the race if turned loose. There nomination fees of 2 soys each, help, however, to swell the amount of the sweepstake. The entrances for the Auckland Cup and Grand Stand Handicap closed on Friday last, but the entries have not been telegraphed. The Patea Races take place on tbe 9th and lOlh inst. There are four races in each day, bat they will probably be confined to local horses. Late English papers famish particalars of soma great swimming .feata. A few months ago, Captain Boy n too, an American, won great celebrity by crossing the English Channel in hia indiarubber dress, aided by paddles aod a sail.
