Thebe was a church parade yesterday morning attended by the City Artillery, Naval Brigade, Artillery and City EiEe Cadets, and College Cadets, who appeared for thefirsfc time in public wearing their new uniforms of blue serge garibaldis and knickerbockers, and grey stockings. Having fallen in at the Drill Shed the volunteers, headed by the Artillery Band, marched to Christ Church. The services in that church both in the morning and evening were choral, and the excellent singing of the very efficient and well trained choir was the subject of general remark. The Bishop of Nelson having been disappointed at the last moment by a clergyman who had promised to leave England for Westport has written to the churchwardens of St. John's Church there stating that his Commissary in England has been directed to look out for another clergyman, "but in the meantime I have to propose to you that an offer which I have had made by Archdeacon Thorpe and the Re? Mr Leighton should be accepted, viz., that the former and Mrs Thorpe should come to "Westport for six weeks from the beginning of the year 1876, and Mr Leighton and Mrs Leighton should come for six weeks afterwards. This would bridge over the interval which must necessarily occur before another clergynun can be found. As Mr Johnstone has arranged to leave at Advent, the interval will nofc be long. lam much obliged by their offer to meet the difficulty."

In company with a friend Mr Perkins was walking along the street when a half-tipsy man jostled against them. Perkms said something to the man by way of remonstrance, when the fellow suddenly drew a revolver from his breast-pocket and fired. The bullet passed close by Mr Perkins and struck his companion, killing him on the spot. The murderer was captured, and when the Cyphrenes left Mr Perkins had been detained a week in San Francisco to give evidence.
