CORRESPONDENCE.

OUR COUNCIL CHAMBER. To the Editor ov the 'Evehinq Mail* Sir— By your report of the last meeting of the City Council I ace that a proposition to purchase the premisrs in which the Council at present holds its meetings is to ba considered at the next sitting. The price is sud to be £875, and the payment to be extended over a period of five years. Now without entering into the question of the value of the premises which, for anything I know to the contrary may be very cheap at the price, I would suggest that the Corporation is not in a position to bind itself to the expenditure of so large a sum. There ia a reserve near the Saltwater Bridge, upon which there is plenty of spaca to build a room large enough for the meeiingso f Council, and such a room might be erected at a very small cost. The house at present on the ground would answer all the purposes of «n offioe. lam aware that what I propose is open to the objection of being aomewhat below the dignity o( the Council, and further that it will be necessarily of a temporary charact r, bat the faofe is Ikati the municipal; purag is juafc now at a

¥cry low ebb, and it is absolutely neccssiry fcbat we shoull husband our resources. By so do ng we may hope at no very distant date to place our Councilors in such a Chamber, as I,andlbelievo the rate, ay era generally, woul i like to see them occ py. At present, however, we caonofc ba e.o cneful or two economical.— l tun, %., -■ . . v- __ . Fobucola. Ne'so^, October 24. (For continuation of News see Jourtk page )
